Ghost Story

You might find this video interesting. The story is that while filming this car commercial in Germany the filmmakers inadvertently captured the image of what some say is a ghost. They didn’t know this until it aired at which time they pulled it from regular rotation. If you watch carefully as the car is winding through the country side you might catch a glimpse of it; it took me a couple of careful viewings to see it myself!

Eeek. Ok.

Remember Zeyads spooky story post? The one ages ago, night time visitations etc. Well, as I began to scroll through the comments following his post (a spooky thing in itself) I noticed a spooky story retold by a commenter.

The time, the place, the details. Chillingly specific. I recognized the story straight away, bar a few minor alterations (old houses in the area the story is from do not have attics). I have never heard that ghost story outside my family. One of the last people I shared that story with passed away about 15 years ago. It was a bit spooky reading a stranger retelling the story, especially in that context.

Well, I suppose I missed out two things there. 1 ~ the original spooky story itself and 2 ~ a promise.

I guess this is turning into a multi-dimensional spooky story. Are you ready for a long one? The original story is about a farm labourers family living in a farm house (labourers quarters, as provided by the farmer). Another family member comes to stay and she and one of the families daughters see some shady characters. Very frightening at the time, it is a true story. Until that point the daughter has been alone in seeing the house's other "inhabitants". Or so she thinks. It transpires that other guests visiting also have some "strange dreams" and request a picture hanging in the room they sleep in be removed.

The daughter remembers waking one particular night and with no real reason walks, though petrified of being anywhere in the house alone, to the living room. In the dead of night on her own she stands in the living room doorway and is frozen to the spot. She cannot scream, she cannot run. She is "scared stiff" and is momentarily as astonished that "scared stiff" is more then merely cliche as she is transfixed by the shadowy figure standing not more then a metre and one half away. The figure has turned to look directly at her and it is at this moment she becomes fixed to the spot. She cannot see his face but feels his gaze. She can see a red cigarette tip glowing in the dark and then suddenly the whole room seems lit up and clear as day as if moonlight has shone into the room and the figure is still standing there, smoking and watching her. For a second she thinks he is a legitimate live visitor but then she realises everyone else is asleep and there are no guests staying. She wants to scream, she cannot. She wills her legs to move, struggling as though against another. Finally after what seems an interminably timeless spell something snaps and she breaks away, physically and vocally, pounding a noisy retreat to her parents room. Luckily her parents are used to her leaping into there bed at odd hours. Her mother offers to go and check out the living room but the girl will not hear of it till daylight. Eventually the mother convinces the daughter. She finds nothing. No trace of an intruder. Only the eery smell of lingering tobacco smoke which sometimes mysteriously pervades the veranda.

After moving, the family hear a story from another couple staying in the house. The woman is standing in the spare room one afternoon, looking out the window. It is a very peaceful room in the afternoon and has an unusually pleasant air that time of day. She feels a hand on her shoulder and thinking it is her partner turns, only to find the room empty. She is alone in the house. Later, she describes the presence as feminine.

So pleasant is the spare room by afternoon that when the family live in the house their daughter enjoys drawing in the room alone, despite her fear by night. It is one of these drawings the guests who have the "strange dreams" request be moved.

Now the last part of the story, the promise. A seperate story really. The farmhouse was built by the grandparents of the farmer who owns it. The daughter is friends with the son of the farmer who owns the farm house. They share all kinds of secrets and one day pondering heavens existance and whether or not reincarnation might be so, make a promise to one another. If one is to die before the other and if there is a state after death they will somehow let the remaining one know. They were children, it was a childs promise. The boy dies in a road accident in his late teens. The girl goes to university, forgets all about haunted houses and old friends. She tries to convince herself that there is a logical explanation for everything, and there is. The smoking shadow man, she dreamt it.

The boy appears vividly in an early morning dream a year or so later. But it is just a dream and the girl would forget it except that later in the day her grandmother makes an unrelated phone call. Out of nowhere, the grandmother asks "whatever happened to that boy next door you were friendly with?". The girl pauses. Odd question. Her grandmother only met the boy once or twice and that was many years ago, the grandmother has never asked about him since and does not know about the accident. "Which boy?" pause "Why?" and her grandmother replies "Your neighbour at the farmhouse. Your grandfather wondered. This morning".

Emigre,
That is spooky. You want to hear something really spooky. As a result of my blog, I get lots and lots of emails from different readers. In the last several days I have recieved several emails from people who probably don't know each other and who are living different countries. Each one of them telling me a story about somebody communicating with them in a dream either living or dead. I feel like this is some kind of an omen of somthing about to happen in my own life. I go to bed every night in terepidation.
