Toll

The kind of numbers no-one likes to see. But it's part of my natural instinct to acknowledge the dead so here I do:

Bridge stampede deaths reported at 852 by some sources and expected to climb. I'm guessing it takes a while for non-local news to filter through to me, it could just be the 24 hour day/night roll over. My local sources are quoting death tolls up 800 and more while the articles I can access from news agencies nearer the scene are a few hours old and still quoting 600-700. A google search reveals:

  • Alijazeera.net Qatar 11 hours ago: more then 600 killed in stampede
  • Ynetnews, Israel 9 hours ago: at least 500 dead in Iraq stampede
  • Zaman Online, Turkey 9 hours ago: Number of Dead may Exceed 600 in Iraq Stampede
  • NDTV.com, India 8 hours ago: nearly 640 feared dead in Iraq stampede
  • Science Daily (press release) 8 hours ago: Hundreds die in Baghdad stampede
  • The Age (subscription), Australia 1 hour ago: toll expected to hit 1,000

Condolences are such a frail thing to offer, but everyone does. It's the only way people have to express empathy. I expect conspiracy plot hatchers to be out on this, and I ignore them all. Let people rest and grieve.

Let them rest and grieve, indeed.

Richsanter,

Could you be more racist?

"Something good for once"?

Write your congressman and ask them to divert some of the money from the $300 billion invasion/occupation of Iraq.

Hey Richie! Am back with some more news.

"In 2001, FEMA warned that a hurricane striking New Orleans was one of the three most likely disasters in the U.S. But the Bush administration cut New Orleans flood control funding by 44 percent to pay for the Iraq war."
Read here for more.

No one can deny that Hurrican Katrina is a diaster of biblical proportions. The images on TV are unbearably painful and it seems much of New Orleans and parts of Mississippi are gone. Forever.

However, Iraq is a human tragedy that has been ongoing for more than 2 years and some would say for the past 37 years.

Iraqis died wholesale yesterday. You could have worded your comments differently to illicit compassion for both tragedies. Instead, you target emigre and spew prejudice.

That's real sad. One would think people learn from catastrophes and learn to embrace the common humanity.

Just so, so sad.

richie boy, are you serious?

Can't you even see how racist and sad you are?

As in:

"i hate trash like you and emigre. you two deserve each other"

AND:

"i gave enough money to you people and never even heard a thanks, in fact, all i get is more bitching from scum like you."

You're so sad. And you want an impartial site? Would any site that contradicts you be impartial?

Here:

Washington Post

Would you like the Chicago Tribune as well?

Even the Germans have picked up what US news commentators are talking about.

I guess you hate all them people too, eh?

Grow up, dude. You sound pitiful.

Richsanter, please, don't swear - you know it means it'll be deleted. Look, in fairness I'll retain the part of your comment which passes my personal censorship guidelines.

Remaining fragment which did not include profanities about me and other posters or threats which he is unable to perform, from richsanter's last comment:

"instead im going to watch you."

Ps to Truth About, I'm not sure richsanter was being racist here, I think he's like that to pretty much anyone that doesn't love America - it doesn't really matter what race. More of a patriotism thing I think.

Anyway, it's good that he's concerned about everyone in New Orleans - it shows that maybe he has some compassion hidden in him somewhere and maybe he can salvage his soul one day if he put his heart into it (am guessing he has one, otherwise what else would he be using to love America with?)

But that single highway better have truth and justice along for the ride, cos if they ain't there, the single highway leads to a dead end.

Yes, and nobody wants to carry a ball and chain that far just to find a washed out hotel and another road to ruin.
