Goodbye, But Wait...

لن أقوم بإضافة أي مدونة الى الدليل ، وبما إنني الشخص الوحيد الذي كان يقوم بذلك - فان هذا يعني إفتراضيا توقف الموقع عن العمل كما يبدو.

على أية حال، سأستمر بإضافة كل جديد في المدونات العراقية إلى دليل المدونات العراقية التجريبي.

I'm not going to add any more blogs to the Iraq Blog Count. It doesn't seem that anybody else is interested in adding blogs but me, so this could very well mean that this side is practically dead.

However, I will still be adding blogs to The Iraq Blog Count Experimental. which still needs to be renamed and perhaps a few touches added here and there. but nothing too much more than what it already is.

The IBCExp is merely Blogger's Blog List which list of all the Iraqi blogs, sorted by most recent posts.

So many new blogs, we need to hire somebody:

1. Iraqi Maqam is a different kind of blog, it is nerdily obsessed with classical Iraqi music, and has a well organized YouTube companion that posts on a regular basis.

2. Khalid from Iraq goes prolific on us with five blogs, which is always bad for us indexing type people ; he seems interested in the Iraqi blogging scene (of sorts) to put up a blog commenting on the best and worst : Iraqiblogupdates.blogspot.com

3. You know Salam Pax is at it again! this time Wordpress and with the oft-touted moniker: The Baghdad Blogger, blogging anew from Baghdad. He's also the first Iraqi twitterer of sorts.

4. Noor el Qamar is written by a "young Iraqi Muslim girl living in the US", self-explanatory.

5. Mhmd of Moo Iraq is a young Iraqi who is just experiencing his home town after living abroad for all his life, he appears to be a friend of Touta's brother. His blog is rather cynical, frank and not yer usual run of the mill. i like.

[ARABIC] It looks like we have another Blogfamily in the making, Attawie's two sisters join the blogosphere, it seems this particular family has a flavor for the arts, while the eldest, Dhayy Awtani, talks about her love for the flute amidst a strong dose of Iraq nostalgia, the youngest Sana's Words I Wish Were Mine features poetry and flowery political commentary. Let's see what mom and dad will come up when they blog.

[ENGLISH] Mosul4All confirms the emergence of a subgenre in the Iraqi blogsophere, the Mosullite Girl Blogs, generally personal blog about likes and dislikes as well as sparse commentary on flying Iraqi shoes and Islamic ceremonies.

[ENGLISH] G0dEatG0D is another atheist blog, this one is in English and based in Jordan. No, I don't have anything to do with this one.

[ARABIC] Iraqi poet Saad Jassem's Maktoob blog, موسيقى الكائن focuses on poetry.

[ARABIC] Another Maktoob blog for Mohamed Sunbah, largely interested in politics.

[ARABIC] Sahar al-Dabbgh, another prominent Kitabat.com writer, has her own blog. al-Dabbagh is an expert in body lanugage and she analyzes the body language of Iraqi politicians with painstaking detail.

[MIXED] Sahab has three blogs, each dedicated to collecting articles about a controversial Iraq shelter: al-Amiriya Shelter which was bombed by Ameican warplanes during the 1991 war, al-Jadriya Shelter, where torture of Sunnis was systematic during the tumultous administration of Interior minister Badr-affiliated Baqir Solagh in 2005, and al-Hanaan Orphanage, where unfed and unattended children were found locked up in 2007.

* Notorious Kitabat writer, self-proclaimed 'Saddamist' and mass grave-denier Ishtar al-Iraqiya adopts the blog format to publish her writings. (Arabic)

* A rather interesting, light-hearted blog is 'Namla 7ola', at first it was hard (in a good way) to fathom who is the person behind this blog, as it had a strange narrative, a 'cross-eyed ant' recounting the social misadventures of a yer run-of-the-mill Iraqi young man, the ant device seems unexplored other than for the cutesy element, which is strange but after a few days the mystery is resolved when the writer decides to tell us a little more about herself:

As someone that had left Iraq years ago, and as a girl whose life-style and experiences vary from those of a guy, I heavily rely on old recounts by siblings and relatives pertaining to their Baghdad-habits, as well as stories told by various friends and net-users as a source of inspiration for the haps and mishaps of Choo8i's life under the current situation in Iraq. Iraqi slang is often used to express certain things and notions as opposed to their English counterparts, just for a firmer bond to the daily life of your average Iraqi youth, down to his manner of speech.

The purpose? The net is full of angry bloggers, appeased bloggers, support and opposition to this party and that public figure. Your average Joe, Choo8i, represents the overlooked part of society where people live the day attempting at as much a taste of normalcy as circumstances would allow, not wasting precious time over futile political debates.

Another blog that's been lying around for a while is al-Rassid, it doesn't take a lot of guessing to figure out the political orientation for this blog:

A strongly anti-Wahhabi prolific blog is Stefan, while it carries many signature Shi'i terminology, it seems to have been written by a secular atheist:

On a different note, Baghdadiat Aziz al-Hijjiya, written by Lina Aziz al-Hijjiya, sets out to publish the writings of Aziz al-Hijjiya, which is concerned with narrating the style of life and customs in early 20th century Baghdad:

Violet for Iraq belongs to the category of day-to-day memoirs of Iraqi teenagers, a blog that talks about. well you know. She also has an Arabic blog in which she publishes poetry. While Aws Ayad opens his blog by being furious about a college incident with a girl.

Ali The Translator seems to confirm the fact that Iraqi translator blogs are making a niche, he talks about stuff such as politics, and also his experiences in Tal-Affar.

Khalid al-Kishtini, a prominent Iraqi writer in the al-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper, has recently started a blog. It seems he is keeping this blog to publish the naughty bits that can't make the cut. I would've published this entirely in Arabic but he has one English entry (which is quite interesting), so maybe he'll be bilingual.

Irregular Blogs : Saddam Hussein's Nephew

The son of Saddam Hussein's sister and former bodyguard, Al-Hussein Arshad Yassin writes omewhat irregularly on, as expected, his blog is very defensive of Uncle and Uncle's policies regarding several topics, including Iraqi Jews :

Now we come to the part where you are all waiting for. So how did Saddam Hussein defend Iraqi Jews? In the year 1992 there was nothing left of Iraqi Jews only 40 families refusing to leave the country. In the year 1992 a Palestinian Muslim threw 2 grenades on a Jewish synagogue in Baghdad killing 2 Jews and one Muslim (the synagogue’s guard). The Palestinian was put on trial and was sentenced to death. My uncle Saddam Hussein (my mother’s brother) gave a speech on TV. I was only 8 years old at the time and I remember nothing of this accident but today I asked my father to tell me what really happened since my father was my uncle’s head of security and bodyguard for 27 years from 1968 after leaving Najaf (where he use to study in the Hawza) till 1995 where he retired. My dad remembers this speech very well, he told me; your uncle went on TV and addressed this speech to the Palestinians living in Iraq saying that any Palestinian holding a grudge on Jews I ask him to leave the country an do his business in Palestinian. I will refuse to let people make out of Iraq a field of personal vendettas. And these Jews are Iraqi in the first place and they are under the protection of the Iraqi government because they are Iraqis and they hold the Iraqi nationality and they have the rights like any Iraqi. Any Palestinian wishing to make a show of his muscles and manhood let him go to Palestinian and make his killing there and not killing Iraqi Jews that have not harmed anyone and have not harmed any Palestinian living in Iraq.

Meanwhile, Iraqi Ghost, a teenage Iraqi boy wrestles with his Iraqi identity (irregularly as well).

Two New Interesting Blogs

We apologize for omitting those two very interesting Iraqi blogs that has been laying around for a while, the first is Sundus Abdulhadi's Mesopotamian Contemplations, a seldom blogging Iraqi artist based in Canada, she has been making a buzz lately around the Arab media for her painting 'Inana in Damascus', which is a commentary on prostitution of Iraqi women in Syria. Her recent post tells us about the story behind the painting's popularity, from American blogs to Arab media.

Second blog is for the Iraqi rapper The Narcycist, a previous member of the Iraqi hip-hop group Euphrates which contributed some very good music to the seminal Iraqi documnetary "Voices of Iraq", He has a way of adding Iraqi pharses and names just at the right moments, you can sample some of The Narcyist's politically-themed music on YouTube, such as this seminal song : 'The Letter'. The Narc's blog is an attitude-packed discussion of rap music, politics, and life for Iraqi and Arabs in the Western word, here is a flavor of his writing in which he is ranting about the influence of Gulf money on rap music and the image of Arabs in the West:

So, Here is a new track by some dude called Ron browz featuring the one'n'only Busta Rhymes. Funny, I was bumping THE COMING, Busta's first record, while pumping iron the other day (3ish). Once again, the American assumption that all brown people are the same gets jumbled into one joint. India is not Arabic people. They are indian. And not indian like 'injan you varmits'. Indian like close to Paskistan, India like one of the most beautiful places on earth. Anyway, this is what happens when you invite cats out to places like Dubai or the anywhere in the Gulf for that matter and not invite them out to Palestine and/or Iraq (interchangeable at this point.) Totally totally totally ignorant. Arab money is long if you were in the Gulf, or are someone who has taken advantage of the War. Ask lil'hamoodi in Naseriya what money is. He'll tell you electricity and a carton of two day old eggs (if he's lucky).

I apologize for all the bloggers here but I couldn't really make time between my laziness to add your blogs, and this is where I make due with this mega-post:

Son of Tigris has a very elegant blog with a neat theme complete with an animated attractive blog title, he is an IT specialist and his main interests are technology, technology and tech...nology.

We seem to have caught Touta just as she begins to unravel in Fog al Nakhal, only two posts down the line and she seems rather hesitant, but let's hope she develops a passion for blogging that equals her passion for learning.

Net Marketing In Iraq is a very unique blog for an Iraqi blog, it is primarily focused on netmarketing techniques in Iraq. Don't ask, I don't know.

هذه مجموعة مدونات ناطقة باللغة العربية رصدناها مؤخرا.

نبدأ بمدونة - مشيئة - و هي مدونة رائعة فعلا للشاعر العراقي المغترب في السويد سعد الياسري
مدونة متمكنة لغويا و تحتوي على نماذج من شعر الياسري اضافة الى نسق المدونات الطبيعي, يتحدث عن السياسة و الفن و الأدب, يقول معرفا بنفسه:

Informative Iraqi Blogs

Mosul is a fine Iraqi city that has gifted writers. They usually write about important things that we often would want to cherish. One recent informative blog I have encountered is Mosul4All, which gives us background about a student's experiences in medical school. It's quite a personal take on things and that makes it very unique to some of us.

We just hope more bloggers will be encouraged to write. It's way of expression of our love for our dear Iraq.

Iraqi Insights is an open forum for Iraqis of all generations and locations to gather and share perspectives.

Zaid is a 21-years-old Chemical Engineer who maintains a blog, Road to Inner Me, where he talks about soccer, college and other things he finds interesting.

I've been laughing a lot during my blog-hunting these days, mostly due to:

ARIDO [ARABIC]

Ahmed Khalaf al-Musawi is an Iraqi atheist from a southern Shi'i background, who is well known in the Arab online atheist community as some sort of a godfather, his writings have a style that I daresay would rival Shalash al-Iraqi's in quality, his style is unique: complete disregard of punctuation that gives an impression of a classical Arabic book, complete ignorance of spelling, and a very flowing narrative filled with an extraordinarily surreal sense of words.

It somehow seems to me that Iraqi Atheists are the largest of all the Arab atheist communities, well, after what's going on in Iraq, who could blame them.

a rather typical Iraqi blog for a college student in his early twenties, except that he can be extremely funny. don't miss احداث فتحت لاصحابها بوابة...الاردن

Less funny but more in the vein of mainstream Iraqi blogs is the serious and brooding is Baghdad Kassakhon [Storyteller], written by a journalist living in Baghdad.

Iraqi Interpreter is a great blog written live from where the action is by a 20-year-old Iraqi interpreter, giving us a much needed firsthand insight in the trials and tribulations of Iraqi interpreters, he is honest, angry and we get to watch him toughened by his life experiences.

They have very recently started to blog and so there's no telling how the blog is going to turn out.. Hopefully however, it's going to last as long as they can breathe!

They say "blogging is difficult but its harldly brain surgery." But this one is. Dr. Haitham H. Shareef writes about all the latest developments in the field of neurology in Iraq. So if you are a brain surgeon looking for like-minded (no pun intended) people or desperate to know if you can get your suprasellar arachnoid cyst treated with endoscopy in Baghdad... this is the blog for you.

What I like about this blog is that it is so ordinary. It shows whatever happens to Iraq we will always bounce back.

So now we have brain surgery what next.. rocket science? oops lets not go there!

Iraqi Translator blogs from Iraq where he works as a translator with the American troops, this is the first blog of its type, his English is far from perfect and hasn't blogged so far about anything important but he's bound to have some interesting stories to tell in the near future.

I also advice you to check the blog Najma added below, Mosul is in heart, it's occasionally funny, lively and has a lot of personal feel in it.

Iraqi Plume holds the title of the only Iraqi blog actively detested by blog darling Sunshine, who accuses her of plagiarism, there are some [huge] angles to this claim, but still, some rather wonderful things began through imitation, besides, the blogosphere could use a few cheery girls anyway.

Inside Iraq is a blog written by Iraqi journalists working in the McClatchy newspapers, it often contains some useful insights.

Iraqi Psychatrist - Colors of Mind

A friend of mine told me this story: When he was six years old, he couldn't sleep at night, his parents decided to let him visit a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist asked him questions and perscribed him medicine, I asked my friend if it did anything, and he said: Yes, I became able to sleep, but only because I didn't want to see the psychiatrist again.

This little anecdote describes the idea that Iraqis in general are skeptical about a person visiting shrinks, automatically associating them with lunacy, and this is why we have today a refreshingly different blog about an Iraqi psychiatrist who stirs up conversations about the origin of Iraqi cockroaches during a formal dinner, talks to dead idols while he's alone, and quite simply just about everything you'd expect from an Iraqi who decided to choose the quizzical career of a psychiatrist in a land where mental disease is associated with Djinn possession. Saminkie is an interesting fresh graduate living in Iraq, often trekking between Baghdad and Mosul. His blog focuses more on personal experiences than dredging political commentary, an essential attraction of blogs and a severely missing one in the Iraqi Blogosphere. While Saminkie often commits gramatical errors, his posts are genuinely worthy to read, if anything, it's because of his unusual profession, he introduces himself as:

Baghdad Dentist

With a recommendation from one of my favourite bloggers, this blog certainly got my attention. Baghdad Dentist is, well, a dentist and he's from Baghdad - but he's working in Mosul. Only into his third post, his reports of the events around him and his life in Mosul makes unmissable reading. Here is his introduction in his own words...

I'm a dentist (fresh graduate). I lived my 23 years in baghdad and living the 24th in mosul. I moved to mosul temporarily since the beginning of violence and the deteriorated security situation.
I lived the best times in baghdad especially in baghdad college secondary school where I graduated from.
I have an obcession of electronics especially computers and communication staff, so I studied in an institute of electronics during summer holiday when I was 15. my big desire was to be an electronic engineer, but the temptation of being a dentist and keen on progress in electronics field (being creative in two fields at the same time) override.
And that is what im going to achieve, working now in a specialized dental centre as a rotator dentist and the rest of the day with computers especially in baghdad I began to make deals to fix used laptops but it’s a small business for the while time. As a rotator dentist im trying my best to get use of my seniors' experience and im planning to get the master degree this year.

I absolutely detest, abhor, despise, hate, the current Iraqi government. I hate the fucking mullahs. I hate Sistani, Maliki, Jaafari, Muqtada al Sadr, Al Hakeem and there rest of the smelly retards - all those sectarian Shia shits from Iran. If you think about it, the answer is blindingly obvious. In her new blog, the hard woman of Iraqi blogs lets out her soft soft squishy side. And Layla comes over as a complex, vulnerable, sensitive person that you really want to get to know. I am slowly becoming a fan. Here is her own introduction...

This is proving more difficult than I imagined.
It's as if there are certain "red lines," I am not supposed to cross, transgress.

On the one hand, I am probably expected to continue fighting the fight - for the most part alone. My other blog is completely devoted to Iraq, even though that was not my only intention. I guess starting this one is an attempt on my part to affirm my own territory, my own space...Only for me. Hence no remarks will be allowed.

The other thing that feels like a stumbling block and which am hoping to turn into a stepping stone - is that old voice in my head that keep repeating in an automated fashion "what will people say"

Again, it feels as if I have stumbled on some big taboo that I need to break down, or chisle away at, sculpt it and change its forms hoping that the final product, will be a piece of personal art.

Anyone complaining about rising Islamist influence in Iraq hasn't seen Iraqi blogs, where the hell are the Islamic blogs? I can't think of any! On the other hand, this is the third atheist blog in a row.

Poor Iraqi is a half-Kurdish man writing from Erbil, he has only two posts so far and the last one is in October, which might mean he lost interest, but anyway, this is his introductory post:

Hey! I can't remember for the life of me when was the last time somebody updated this blog, it seems like the Iraqi blogodrome is experiencing a menstrual pause, for what it's worth, let's skip speculations and stick to indexing.

Perhaps one of the effects of a religious war of any sort is an angry Godless reaction, while infidel Iraqi bloggers have long been a fixation here, i mean, hey, the first Iraqi blogger was an atheist, but it was not until Iraqi Atheist came about that blogs began to emerge totally focused upon religion-bashing, and today we present to you Iraq The Land of Sand and Ash, this arabic-language blog is heavily inspired by perhaps the most well-known Arab atheist blogger, the Emirati Ben Kerishan, going as far as copying his paragraph-image-paragraph writing rhythm and his own distinct phrases and terms such as 'the Land of Sands', unfortunately, he doesn't seem to possess the same uncanny wit or depth of Kerishan, ending up like a secondhand copycat, he introduces himself as :

Atheeriraqi has dedicated his blog to the promotion of atheism (in Arabic). What more is there to say? Well quite a lot actually. If you read Arabic or want to use Google's web page translator you can read his (very) detailed arguments. Atheer writes:

LGBTQ of Iraq blogs in Arabic and, he assures me, soon, in English about Lesbian and Gay issues in Iraq. Lesbians and Gays are regularly singled out and targeted by the various armed groups in Iraq.

Most Iraqis of my father generation will make a face like they have seen something disgusting when you mentions gays. But even my father would point out that a delegation of gays from the UK visited Iraq in the 1930's because, at that time, gays had more rights in Iraq than they did in Britain. This is because what you did in the privacy of your own home in Iraq is treated as your own business and nobody else's. Now with the extremist militias running freely imposing there own perverse laws not even the home is safe. And rights for gays and lesbians has become an important issue. Simply because if don't care about this one then you will be next.

1. Last of Iraqis: Iraqi dentist who is a relative of Zeyad, still living in Iraq, and that's a big plus. A solid blog with perhaps the best blog-coverage so far of the 2nd Askari incident, as well as an interesting video of Adhamiya. Blogs dilligently.
2. Kurdistan Diary: Okay, don't flame me for this but Kurdistan is still part of Iraq at least nominally so far, this one anyway has interesting stuff to say, starting with this unusual post about wanting to fight for the troublesome PKK.
3. Check out this another Kurdish blog from an engineer in Irbil, The World Has Another Face, however if he didn't say he is Kurdish you would hardly recognize it, filled with the same emotions and sentiments for Iraq as any other normal Iraqi, this blog is mostly poems written in Arabic, he has another blog, which is mentioned on his sidebar, which is filled with interesting pictures.

I also added the new blog URL for 3eeraqimedic, who deleted her blog on a panic moment but we managed to persuade her otherwise.

Most Sectarian Blog Ever - Revisited

Following on from The Kid declaring The Shaqawa to be 'The Most Sectarian Blog Ever' it is time to revisit this award in light of the last blog I reviewed.

Having written a positive post about Layla Anwar's blog An Arab Woman Blues it is time for some balance. When I reviewed her blog for the previous post I just read through a couple of posts and thought "she has issues but that's OK." Then I wondered ... this blog has been going on for a year now why on earth has no other IraqBlogCount member picked it up.

A short scan through her archive and I realized... Layla Anwar represents a part of Iraqi society that most ordinary Iraqi's would rather block out or pass on as not Iraqi. Her blog blatantly and crudely embodies the fanatical pro-Saddam sect that dogged the existence of nearly every Iraqi with ties to their country. And sectarian she is. You see, during the thirty years of Saddam's reign he built around his personality cult his own sect just as fanatical as any Shia or Sunni extremists that makes life in Baghdad hell for ordinary Iraqis.

What interests me is that our two most-sectarian bloggers have much more in common than they would like to admit.

A reverential love for their sect leader....

Here Layla is writing to Saddam:

I will address you as Saddam Hussein, Sir.
Even though I still consider you to be the legitimate President of Iraq, allow me not to use any formalities here. Let us forget titles , ranks and the rest . ... I don't care what they say about You . The misuses and abuses of power, the Dujails, the Anfals and the rest of the well knitted pieces of grossly exaggerated melodramas. I know one Truth Sir,You stayed in Iraq and did not run away like the rest.

And here is Shaqawa writing about Hakim:

Hakim is of course the leader of SIIC, the largest group of the largest list in parliament. So he is very powerful. He is the son of the Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Mohsen al-Hakim, who was the most important leader of the Shi’a before Sayyid Abul-Qasim al-Khoei and Sayyid Ali al-Sistani. ... Of course there are so many sad stories in Iraq. Hakim getting sick is just one thing out of very many... I think there are some very good things about Hakim and also if Hakim is not acting as a leader for Iraq because of his health, it is bad for the Iraqi people

And the irony that both bloggers do not consider themselves Sectarian. Layla talks proudly of her Shia roots while Shaqawa will write of his objectivity.

But, the real question is who wins. Well, after Layla's fawning letter to Saddam and labelling of Basra as an Iranian enclave; I am sorry Shaqawa you are going to have to hand over your award!

An Arab Woman's Blues

Layla Anwar gives the world a piece of her mind in beautifully powerful prose that leaves you simply awestruck. One commenter summed her blog up in one word - "wow". Here are her words on the plight of Iraqi women:

You know what woman battering is don't you?

It is basically when a man beats, strikes, punches, kicks, pounds...a woman and sometimes severly enough that she ends up in hospital and sometimes severly enough to bring about her death.

It is interesting to note that the verb "to batter" is also used in cooking i.e to make a dough. The French have similar anologies between battering a woman and food. They would say he turned her into a "compote".(compote is cooked fruits). Ditto for Arabic expressions. They would say he broke her bones, they became like "soup"...

Am sure other "cultures" have more analogies of the same sort. I will leave it to you to dig up some expressions that you are familiar with, along the same lines...

Did you notice something here? A common trait in the use of words, in the use of language?

It is as if they allude to render that "thing" liquefied, easily moulded, soft to the palate...
In sum, easily mixed and easily digestible. I will also leave it to you to make further associations on the same theme.

No society is immune from woman battering. I will not dwell on figures now. All societies are guilty of it. East and West, equally guilty. And R.Kipling was wrong when he said that East and West shall never meet. They do meet. They met. They met in Iraq.

They met in Iraq, the land, the earth, the Mother...
They also met and agreed on her daughters bodies - Iraqi Women.

That body which, since the "liberation", has become a public commodity. A public thing. A thing to be veiled, a thing to be controlled, a thing to be ordered about, a thing to be disposed of, a thing to be battered, moulded, shaped into a liquefied, soft, yielding thing. A digestible thing.

Yes, batter, pound, strike, punch, beat, rape, torture, imprison...that "thing" and ultimately dispose of it, annihilate it.

Both "East and West" are bent on the destruction of Iraqi women.
It is as if, plundered, occupied Iraq has become the center point, the "lieu" where these forces can pour out their venom, their deep hatred, their frustrated instincts, their perversities...In sum their collective misogyny.

A new technology blog from Iraq! Everything is here from controlling USB devices without kernel modules in Linux to finding good cheep hotels and Internet access in Basra.

Hasan worked in Qatar and moved back to Iraq after his contract ended. He chose Basra because Baghdad is just too dangerous. Good luck and keep posting we need to hear more from that city. He writes:

unlike Baghdad , Basrah is full of life. The streets are always crowded and you don't have to take the same cautions like in Baghdad.

Police are army checkpoints are everywhere in the city which makes you feel safe , I saw some British patrols during the day there , I tried to avoid them. But they looked more friendly than the American army.

Most Sectarain Blog Ever

You know, as much as our blogosphere has a lot of agressive opinions, there has never been someone who is explicit and brazen about his sectarain inclinations, this is where we were hugely lacking in my opinion because this sort of opinion is bascially present with a considerable portion of Iraqis. We are not all so nice and to prove that you can simply take a look at our homeland, al-Shaqawa (which translates into 'The Malignanace') must have felt the same way too, or he doesn't care. His blog isn't coy like Riverbend, nor trying to sound journalistically-neutral like Zeyad, nor is he a reasonable political analyst like ITM, he is an angry, vulgar, simplistic piece of sectarain hatred that is raw and unprocessed. I must say that his viewpoints reflect a nice deal of the Iraqi society today and its voice must be also heard, no matter how rotten and bad it is. So that you understand how bad really is the sectarain tensions are escalating in every family of Iraq right now.

A new double-blog from 18-year-old Iraqi boy forced to move to Irbil from Baghdad. His first blog is entitled I Love You Iraq and is the place where he lays out his serious, politically-inclined thoughts and ideas, his other blog, which I chose to title him by because it's a little bit varied from what we usually see in Guy Iraqi blogs is his lighter fun side which discusses music, lifestyles etc.

Another video game series is being eyed for a film adaptation franchise, this time the Prince of Persia games from Ubisoft. The game has taken off in recent years with at least 3 recent sequels and become a huge hit for Ubisoft. The series has been in discussion for a while with Disney, since Hollywood mogul Jerry Bruckheimer bought the rights in 2004. The Jim Hill Media blog talked about it briefly, stating that “in theory [Prince of Persia] will be Disney's big action-adventure release for the Summer of 2008.” Which afterwards “could then lead to a new hit series of movies for the studio.”

They were both strong and very powerful. But even with all her strength, he was more advanced. Eyes locked on each others, neither of them made a move to finish it. They studied each other. Both composed, unafraid. Then to her astonishment, he smiled. A slow, sad smile that appeared faintly on his lips. He lowered his gun.
“Ladies first” he spoke softly.
She gazed at him for a very long time.
“Don’t…don’t you dare…” she said as her eyes started to fill with tears.
“You coward! Don’t back off now!” she shouted at him but he didn’t respond. He continued watching her. She was beautiful. Tears flooded her eyes and slowly fell down her cheeks. Without thinking of the consequences or the meaning of what he was doing, he moved closer to her and pulled her into his arms. For a moment, she stood there rigidly in his arms and then with a quiet sob, he felt her body sag. The gun dropped from her hand and she leaned against him, resting her head on his shoulder. She let him hold her and she cried. Silent tears full of anguish, misery, and grief. It was a long time before she stopped and even a longer time before either of them spoke.

What better way could we describe Iraqi memories than by naming our blog Nomee Hello, the Iraqi fruit whose taste is a decliate enchanting comibation of the sour and sweet.
A very lyrical blog that sparkles with a love that can only be forthcoming from the depths of a woman, her name is Yasmine (Blanche), She writes about Ajam nabuq, the Aladdin heater and the Baghdad rain ; things, objects and fruits that are unique in their Iraqiness and which opens up a window to explore those memories, bittersweet memories.

The weather suddenly changed.. without previous warning it turned from sunny with a bit of cool air, to gloomy with cold wind and dark grey clouds ..i thought to myself looking at the sky : would it rain?? i dont smell rain in the air (i always felt i could smell rain before it actually rains)..i love rain.. i love watching it, i love being out when its pouring, i love the scent it has.. in Baghadad, the rain had a differnt scent..tabaan no other rain but Baghadad rain would have it..its a wonderful mixture of humid dust and water.. my aunt used to laugh at me when i say while standing with a window open in the rain : reehat trab..not reehat matar.. i would say there is no such scent elsewhere , bas b baghadad..she would laugh and say : all rain smells the same..
i didnt know at the time there would come a time with me out smelling other (motar) than baghdad's.. ooof how i wish to b standing again behind the same open window, in our house back there..i would have the sopa lit (aladdin sopa ofcourse) with its khorafi warmth (no other sopa could replace aladdin sopa for me, uptill now..and yes, el sopa also had a special distiguished smell which i adore).. my room was on the 2nd floor, i would see the top of nakhlat el jeeran, part of their garden hidden with ashjar el portuqal, they had so many of them.. and the flower beds lined with all colors.. my mother had wahes in gardening too at the time, she used to bring shatlat and try new plants.. our hadiqa was so distiguished, no trees, just high rose bushes and exquisite kinds of plants with beautifully colored flowers.. my mother kept plants inside the house too.. green was all around us inside and out .. she took great pride in her garden..she would catch me picking a few roses everyday before qoing to work , so i would put them on my desk.. she would open the hall window and scolds me like a child saying : u left us no roses to look at.. and i would smile and say there r still many more left.. and run away with my wonderful treasure..it smelled incredibly beautiful .. subhan Allah was it only the roses in hadeeqtna that smelled different ? or was it the roses of another time ??..in Baghadad? ..

I am writing this blog to explain what a typical Iraqi woman goes through in her daily life , and to comment on both social and political circumstances the country is going through .

So starts Iraqiya76, an Iraqi woman who works for a government ministry. Already at 3 posts and this blog is becoming something for essential reading...

....I want to be able to come to work and think of something other than " oh no it might explode here or maybe there ....who is gonna take care of my daughter if I die? " ever since an explosion took place near where we were driving ...and when I say close I mean really close maybe like 40 meters away its a miracle we made it if the driver had gone a few meters closer I wouldnt be here now ! please I want to be able to think of something else other than this something like work like a vacation like what im gonna make for lunch ....the constant feeling that I have is will I MAKE IT HOME ALIVE !!! I just wish that the day where I dont have to worry about these things will come soon !

A red Light in the afternoon

I know I should be writing my thesis instead of blogging but I just don't feel like it. Don't know if I would finish my project or not, all I know that I should not quit because I'm no quitter.

Any way, I think that there is to much to say about the Iraqis situation outside their country, especially in Jordan.

Today I was in a cab going to place called Swaifiah, we stopped for a red light and a newspaper seller came out of no where begging us to buy one. I knew that he was an Iraqi immigrant from his accent, seeing the condition he was in and the way he begged for anybody to buy something from him made me shiver. I had to give him some money, after all we Iraqis should help each other till the black clouds surrounding our country pass. I gave him some money and told him that it was a gift and I don't need a news paper. The guy looked at me and threw back my money which was more than enough to buy a dozen of his newspapers, he told me that he's no begger and that I should keep my money if I don't want to buy something.

In Iraq this kind of thing almost never happens, it never happened to me, and to see the guys shape as if he hadn't eaten anything for days and the condition of his clothes and still having this kind of pride after all the things we've been through and knowing that things might get even worse and still keeping our pride and dignity made me proud that I'm an Iraqi citizen, I wanted to go out in the street and shout it out loud. I got hold of my self and kept quite knowing that doing such things would get me into more troubles that I already have.

Some might wonder why a guy would leave his own country and wander in a foreign city selling papers, gum and cigarettes. My answer to you is "Watch the friggin news!!!".

After all that being said I should go back to my work and I want you guys to pray for all of us that maybe one day we'll get back home.

"Many threats surrounds us nowadays and we all just sitting here waiting for our fate.
Just what are we waiting for thats the question that been bothering me for quite a while now.
Did we gave up hope? Are we waiting for someone or something to take us out of our misery? or are we just satisfied to were our action has taken us? and is there a way to go back and fix the mistakes that we've made?
Put a big question mark after the last one, too many question and no one got the answer to any one of them.

These days we lie to each other, talking behind our best friends back, steal for fun, and sometimes even kill for fun. What are we trying to achieve? and what are we getting from doing all that, the answer is NOTHING.

How to make this world a better place to live? anybody got an idea?

Now why am I asking too many questions that I know no one can answer and moreover why am I doing it on my first post?
I really donno, maybe I got bored of this life and maybe I got sick of hearing the same bullshit everyday, the excuses and justification of wars, pollution, poverty and diseases that surround us.
The ones that we hear about in the news and never raise our voice against it.

2. Nadia N : Has two blogs: Rednecks on Ice for her trivalities, and Leaving Iraq for her more serious-minded politics, possibly her name is Hassibah. (which indeed is kinda funny).

3. Ahmed al-Katib: Arabic-language maktoob blog for formerly Shia but now a hybrid of Shia-Sunni writer, he frequently appeared on TV stations. His book is also worth checking out. It's also nice to know that his blood his been spilt by Shia clergymen (meaning: it's okay to kill him a la Salman Rushdie)

Yesterday was round 2 of mortar missiles attacks on my neighbourhood,
over 20 mortar missiles fell on the neighbourhood and caused 30 deaths
and injuries.
Here is my side of the story:
I was at my grandmoah's house which happens to be next door to my
house, me and my cousin were at the back garden playing soccer and
moking on each other. Suddenly we heard a very loud noise of mortar
missile passing over us, I said "did you hear it?" and by the time he
was saying "yes", a huge explosion took place, it was very close to us,
we couldn't tell where it exactly fell as it was too close, we ran
inside my grandmoah's house and waited there for several minutes.
Shortly after that, we heard screaming, shouting and people running in
the street, we ran out to the street to see what happened.
At first, I couldn't see as there was alot of dust and ashes in the
street, then my vision cleared and I saw smoke clouds coming out from
the roof of the house of my neighbour which is in front of my house.Instinctly I ran with the people to the inside of my neighbour's house
to check for survivers, there were women all over the place shouting
and screaming "help him, help him, he is at the roof", meanwhile mortar
missiles were falling here and there very close to us. Me and several
people ran to the roof of the house, and there was my neighbour lying
on the floor with his legs got cut due to the explosion and he was
severly bleeding and there was blood stains all of him.I was completely shocked, scared and terrified, I stood there and
didn't know what to do.A man who was standing next to me shouted on me "come on!, grap him
with me, lets take him to the hospital", I ran to him and carried my
neighbour with him, we went down to the street carrying my neighbour
where a kind man stopped his car and took us with him to the hospital.
Although I tied his cut off legs and squeezed his legs trying to stop
the bleeding, but by the time we arrived to the hospital, he was
already gone, as he was bleeding severly.
In the hospital they didn't do anything to him, because he was already
dead, they took him to the bodies refrigerator.shortly after his son (my neighbour's son) arrived to the hospital, he
was shouting and crying "where is he? I wanna see him", we went to the
bodies refrigeraotr, and it wasn't actually a refrigerator, bodies were
lying on the floor, as there were too many bodies and there weren't
enough rooms for them in the frig.The view of the bodies lying on the floor was very disgusting and sad,
most of the bodies were victims of the mortar attacks.
Anyway, my neighbour relatives came to the hospital and brought coffin
for there dead relative, we took the body and headed back to my
neighbour house, so that his wife and kids can see him for the last
time before they bury him. I told them not to take him to his parents,
because it would be very painful for his kids to see their father dead
and his legs cut off, anyway, his son insisted on taking him back home.
We took him back to his house, and there was his wife and kids waiting
for him and by that time they didn't know whether their father was dead
or not, by the time they saw the coffin they started screaming,
shouting and crying. I was very touched seeing the tears of his little
kids crying with so much pain.
Shortly after that, his son said "lets take him to the cemetery, I want
him to be buried before it gets dark". so they took him to the cemetery
right away. the considerd him as a martyr.(In islam the martyr should be buried right away, with his blood and
with his clothes he was wearing when he died).Anyway, we went to the cemetery, and the handlers started to bury him,
I was standing with my cousin, near them watching them, before they
were done closing his grave, another round of mortar attacks took place
very very close to the cemetery, people just started to run and left
his grave not completely closed, Me and my cousin closed his grave and
ran to the car and headed back home.
When me and my cousin went back, my neighbours told us that another
mortar missile fell on my grandmoah's house but it didn't explode,
thank god it didn't explode because my grandmoah was alone in the
house.
thats what happened yesterday, god knows what more can happen.

I have deleted all nonexistent blogs as well a couple of unrelated blogs, separated the abandoned blogs from ones which are still active, and the result is as you see it. Down from 212 to 110. This was not a methodical business, I have made some mistakes here and there but the error margin could be by the approximity of 1 to 5 blogs.
This is one of several ideas I have for this site, and perhaps the most boring. Expect more in the future.

that bit, namely: "Then Some!", is something i like to add to the end of most posts, to point out that it wasn't over as simply as that..

for example:
when one says:
"I kicked his butt."
the sentence innotates sublimely... oh whatever, it means you beat the tar out of some poor bastard and got on with it.

but, when the same person above says:
"I kicked his butt, and THEN SOME!"
basically means the same as above, but, in addition, it is hinted that you hanged him upside down by the family jewels, roasted onions on his ears, plundered his village, took his wenches for yer own, and basically had yourself a jolly good time!

but, this is all hinted at, mind you.

the beauty of this sentence, "Then Some!", lies in its versatility.

it can be applied anywhere, to denote, as explained earlier, that you went that extra mile.

now this is a rare find, an iraqi who understands what kendo is, and NOT JUST THE TRANSLATION OF THE WORD, DAMMIT!

let me explain:

i guess, to 90% or more of iraqis, "athletics" EXCLUSIVELY means one of the following things:

a) Anything involving a spherical leather/rubber object (mostly football, thats "soccer" to non-metric system peoples)

b) 7adeed (bodybuilding/weightlifting/steroidpumping)

c) M7ebis (i believe this word doesnt exist in a non-iraqi tongue, something akin to "who stole the goddamn ring", thats what!)

d) All of the above.

so, when you find someone who can give you an answer not belonging to those above, you just know this is something special!

i guess the cynics, the critics, and the couch-coaches will jump at this golden opportunity to mock someone who "strayed outside the flock"..
oh well..

The point, however, is not to just "cut school" so we can "march in a few rallies." We should be marching with some purpose and not just as passive participants who might take some time off of our busy schedule to criticize our government. I have pondered this over and over, I am not sure, but I still have to present this for public scrutiny:

Theory: I believe that someone is tampering with Iraqi Blogs, deleting and possessing them at his/her/their will.

Here are some of the things that lead to this conclusion:

1. Some Iraqi blogs, who are listed at the left, have been replaced by blogs that more or less bear the same general features: a one page post, three links to the left, at least of 1 of which has pornorgaphy content, the words forming the title are joined together: chiefofallmaladies, the creation date is somewhere 2006, while their position on the list suggests they were created earlier, nobody noticed this because of these blogs are way obscure.

these blogs include:

2. http://theomania.blogspot.com Theomania, blog re-created May 06, owner: 1rr3sp0ns1bl3

Of course, there's the chance that these blogs were deleted by their original owners and the name was reclaimed, but the odds of it being claimed by the exact same person is quite surprising!

5. Day By Day: http://baghday.blogspot.com, This was by Saif al-Yassin (you can see the post introducing him to IBC below), I am sure because he is one of the four friends of mine who were killed in a double-car explosion June 11, 2006.

7. Iraqi Rocker http://iraqirocker.blogspot.com used to be madshadows.blogspot.com, but it is my belief that he changed his name, as the guy didn't complain and all his archive was carried along.

There are times when certain injustices trump the need for adherence to topical matters. This is a blog that helps point those in the direction of Iraqi voices, sure. I haven't written or participated in this blog for some time for a number of reasons. I've had trouble blogging about the situation in Iraq for a long time now. What else could I possibly add? After hearing first-hand about some of the tragedy taking place on a daily scale, I feel I am irrelevant. I didn't go through that...
And sure, there's the argument that many Qanas take place in Iraq. Believe me, I hear it. But this brutal attack on women and children deserves mention everywhere and anywhere. 37 children were killed in an instant. This insanity has to stop. American weapons that were given to Israel to defend itself are being used to kill babies in Lebanon. Plainly, this is how most of the Arab world sees the situation now. And whether you like it or not, this is pretty much an indisputable fact.

I wish for peace and grace to prevail. But when such images are the realities of Israeli brutality, saying there's a 48 hour cease-fire just doesn't cut it. This will happen again. And when it does, I'm afraid of the consequences.

So I'm not overly indulgant, I must say that the Iraqi blogosphere gets more and more interesting. I appreciate the scores of new voices, which add vivid color to a exceedingly dim image otherwise portrayed in the media. I am humbled by your sharing. And I salut all of you.

Iraqi blogs are growing in quantity and quality. I am pleased to announce three new quality blogs...

A new weblog has been created on a much-needed subject. It is for Expatriate Iraqi Scientists and their role is to "Stay united and rejuvenate Iraq's scientific heritage". One important task they have started is to gather information about the spate of assassinations of Iraqi academics and professionals. One thing I want to link to here is a PDF showing the demographics of assassinations in Iraq. What is most horrifying about this is not so much the division of killings, but the fact that enough people were killed that meaningful statistics can be gathered.

Also, this blog came to my attention from a a little Smiley :-) placed in my comments section... A very warm welcome to new blogger, Fatima. Being born and raised in the US and now living in Baghdad shed is a Bridge Blog in her own right. She is, Thoughts From Baghdad. And she blogs about... her thoughts on living in post-Saddam Baghdad. I have to highlight here her post of some amazing pictures of sandstorms in Baghdad. But I did not have the time to ask for her permission to show them so you will just have to click on the links for yourself of... sandstorms and more sandstorms.

stories that come "right from the hood", with extremely simple characters, and extremely difficult language if you are not Iraqi but actually it's the language of the most simple people in Iraq, if you are a foreigner, you need to study Arabic for two years, and then Iraqi for 12 years, and then live among Iraqis for 20 years, to understand all the words he uses, yet, the content is so simple, speaks out the mind of the regular Iraqi person in the street, and very humorous too.

Though between the witty, sarcastic and critical lines of Shalash, one can detect a broken-hearted man, a man of dashed dreams who is compelled to see the authority in his country transferred from chauvinistic and genocidal Arab nationalists to a group of men who aspire to bring Iraq to the 7th century.

The idea for this blog is not to make another Shalash or even an English Shalash, it is rather to introduce Shalash to the English speaking world.
